How quickly do you recover?

According to researchers (in a report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association) somebody’s risk of having life-threatening heart disease can be determined easily and accurately – using a simple (and non-invasive) test, heart rate recovery.

Heart rate recovery is essentially measuring how quickly your heart rate falls in the 60 seconds after exercising at peak (think red zone on your MYZONE belt).

The healthier your heart is, the quicker it can regulate and return to its ‘normal’ beat. The less healthy your heart is, the longer it takes it to recover from something like intense exercise.

Researchers found that people with an abnormal heart rate recovery, which consists of a “score” (decrease in the number of beats in one minute) of 12 beats or less in 60 seconds, were at a greater risk of heart disease than those with a higher “score” (for normal heart rate recovery) of between 15 to 25 beats per minute.
