Speedflex Q&A – Anthony Halliwell

This February, Anthony, Speeedflex Trainer from West Byfleet, talks about falling on his face trying to copy Michael Jackson’s dance moves and how his attention span only holds for Sir David Attenborough..


Who is your hero/who do you look up to?

My hero when I grew up was (and still is!) John Barnes. He is the main reason I support Liverpool as when I was growing up I was a big football fan and he was one of a very few black players playing at the time. I would sit for hours watching videos of him and try to copy what he did on the pitch.

Where in the world would you most like to visit?

The only place on my list that I would like to visit is New York. I have family who live out there and they keep asking me to visit. I would also like to spend a lot of time in the sports shops – you can’t beat buying trainers, t-shirts and jogging bottoms.

What’s your favourite film and song?

Very easy choice, I’m a big Denzel Washington fan, I have all of his films and my favourite has to be ‘Man On Fire’ – if you haven’t seen it you must.

My favourite song is slightly harder to choose from. I’ve chosen the very first artist I listened to and the song was also in the film he made which I watched all the time when I was little. The legend that is Michael Jackson with Smooth Criminal. I could have said several but this one stands out as I would spend hours trying to do the move where he leans forward. I spent a lot of time flat on my face trying that!

If you could have any job in the world, which one would you choose?

 If I had any job in the world it would be an owner of a nightclub. It’s a place you go to socialise and listen to music. A good nightclub is a happy place and gives people lasting memories of nights out.

What’s the best piece of advice anybody has given you?

 The best piece of advice I can give is never give up and don’t let anybody tell you ‘you can’t do that’.

I will defy any person that says you can’t do that. If it means that much to you be positive and keep going it may not happen straight away but keep going and it will. I also really like a quote from a speech made by Denzel Washington “Knocked down 7 times, got up 8.”

If you were stranded on a desert island and you could choose three things to have, what would they be?

The 3 things I would take would be a photo of my family (to keep me going to get OFF that island), a football (to keep me amused and would paint a face on it and call it Wilson – it would double up as a float too because I’m an awful swimmer) and finally a knife (they can be used for almost anything).

You’re hosting a dinner party and can invite any three people (dead or alive) who would you invite and why?

First up would be Michael Jackson to cover the music and entertainment for the evening. The second is a hard one, struggling to choose between Denzel Washington or Will Smith but Denzel has just pipped it (but I’m devastated I’ve had to choose). Last is the only man that can get and keep my attention for an hour while watching TV and I make a point of not missing any episodes, Sir David Attenborough, I would just sit and listen to his stories. I think the three would complement each other and it would be a good evening.

What one item would you want to save if your house was on fire?

To be honest if my family are out then let it be, possessions can be replaced. If I had to choose it would be a model car my grandad made for me. He put it together by hand and was made especially for me being his first grandson.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

You can’t beat a good seasoned steak and triple cooked chips.

For you, what’s the best thing about training at Speedflex?

For me the best thing about Speedflex is it brings people together of all ages and fitness levels. It also creates a community feel which is unique experience. It’s a place where as a Trainer we want people to come in and say to themselves ‘that was challenging but I enjoyed it’.
